Accident Insurance

Accident Insurance can help you better prepare to take care of the unexpected expenses related to an unforeseen accidental injury. These great benefits are available to you through MetLife – they offercompetitive group rates and convenient payroll deduction so you don’t have to worry about writing a check or missing a payment!

Eligibility

Accident insurance is available to faculty, staff and AAP's hired to work at least 30 hours per week or 75% FTE who are living and working in the United States and are actively at work at the time of election. Fellows are not eligible for this benefit.

Enrolling

Newly eligible employees may elect these benefits through their regular New Hire Benefit Election event in GMS. As with all other electable benefits, Accident Insurance coverage will take effect on the first of the month following, or coinciding with, your date of hire.

Making Changes
These benefits are subject to the same Open Enrollment rules as your other benefits, meaning you may only freely make changes to your coverage during the annual Open Enrollment Period, typically held October 15- November 15, changes taking effect January 1 of the following year. 

How does it work?

Group Accident Insurance complements your medical coverage by helping to ease the financial impact of an accident. It provides you with a payment to use as you see fit and can help with any of the out-of-pocket expenses you may incur as a result of an accident, such as insurance deductibles, copays, transportation to/from medical centers, childcare and more.

Accident coverage includes:

  • Coverage that can go with you if your employment status changes

When does coverage end?

Critical Illness Insurance

MetLife Critical Illness Insurance complements (does not replace) your existing medical and disability income coverage. It can help you create a plan to manage the costs of certain critical illnesses. These are the expenses your medical insurance, no matter how good, was not designed to cover.

Eligibility

Newly eligible employees hired on or after May 1, 2014 may elect these benefits through their regular New Hire Benefit Election event in GMS. As with all other electable benefits, Critical Illness Insurance coverage will take effect on the first of the month following, or coinciding with, your date of hire.

Making Changes
These benefits are subject to the same Open Enrollment rules as your other benefits, meaning you may only freely make changes to your coverage during the annual Open Enrollment Period, typically held October 15- November 15, changes taking effect January 1 of the following year. 

How does it work?

MetLife Critical Illness Insurance provides coverage for covered conditions in three distinct categories as defined in the certificate: certain cancer-related conditions, certain heart-related conditions and certain other conditions.

  • Complements your existing medical coverage
  • Additional occurrence benefit
  • Lump-sum benefit payment can be used any way you see fit
  • No need to submit expense receipts
  • No medical questions during the annual open enrollment period
  • Convenient payroll deduction

During your enrollment period, you will not have to answer any medical questions. Provided you are actively at work and have medical insurance, you will be accepted for coverage. Once enrolled, if you experience one of the conditions within any category, you'll receive a lump-sum benefit payment all at once to use as you see fit. This lump-sum benefit payment can be used in any way you like, from co-pays and deductibles to childcare and mortgage payments. And with the additional occurrence benefit, you can potentially receive lump-sum benefits in three different categories - cancer-related conditions, heart-related conditions and other conditions.

MetLaw (Hyatt Legal Plan)

The Hyatt Legal Plan from MetLife provides full coverage for a number of legal matters and unlimited telephone consultations. Whether you're buying a new home, drawing up a will or just needing some legal advice, the Hyatt Legal Plan can give you easy access to experienced, local network attorneys. Plus, you receive a wide range of covered legal services though payroll deduction. When you use one of Hyatt Legal's participating local attorneys, help is just a phone call away! 

The cost of the plan is $16.50 per month and covers you, your spouse and eligible dependents. Please note that some exclusions do apply, including employment-related matters, patent, trademark and copyright matters, and statutory benefits. Participating attorneys do not represent Georgetown and are not acting on behalf of Georgetown University.

Car Sharing

What is car sharing? The Carsharing Association defines it as way "for local users to support of community transit and environmental goals... decreasing personal car ownership, reducing vehicle distance travelled, improving urban land use and development, providing affordable access to vehicles for all constituencies, as well as motivating residents to walk, cycle and take buses and trains, and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels while reducing the emission of greenhouse gases."  Whoa.
