Tuition Benefits for Faculty & Staff
Georgetown University offers tuition assistance to eligible faculty and staff for courses taken at Georgetown University and/or at other approved outside institutions. It is important to note that a lifetime maximum applies toward this benefit. If you are using TAP benefits for courses taken strictly at Georgetown, your maximum benefit is determined by credit hours or semesters (depending on whether you are faculty, AAP or staff); if you are taking courses at outside institutions this maximum is a dollar equivalent; if you take courses both Georgetown and an outside institution your benefit will be determined by a combination of credit hours/semesters and dollars.
Please note that the cost of non-credit courses (including those taken through the Center for Professional Development at Georgetown University) will be applied toward your total dollar lifetime maximum. For example, one course costing $14,000 would exhaust your lifetime TAP benefit.

Service With Other Employers
In certain limited circumstances, service with other employers can be used to meet TAP eligibility requirements. In order for this provision to apply, the participant must meet all of the following requirements:
-
The person must be a faculty member.
-
The person must have been hired on or after July 1, 2001.
-
The person must have been employed in a "tenure track" position at his or her prior college or university.
-
The benefits must be used for the participant's child.
For example, this provision does not apply to staff members or AAPs, nor does it apply to faculty members who wish to use TAP benefits for themselves, nor does it apply to any faculty member hired before July 1, 2001.
Additionally, this exception applies solely for meeting the eligibility requirements for the Plan. For example, if a person meets all the eligibility requirements above, and held a tenure track position with another university for 20 years, he or she would not receive TAP benefits based on the Plan's pre-1996 provisions, but rather based on the current provisions.
Other Information You Should Know
The taxation of tuition benefits can be a complicated matter. Please refer to our TAP FAQ's or Tuition Tax Facts for more information on this important topic.
You are required to complete forms for each semester or quarter of study for which you wish to receive benefits under the TAP. The forms, and instructions to assist you in completing the forms, are available on-line in the Forms Library.
